The Synagogue in Nizhny Novgorod held a charity drive on 28 October, aimed at improving the lives of children from poor and underprivileged families. Carried out by the Jewish community of Nizhny Novgorod through the support of the Ohr Avner Foundation and 'Keren Edidut leyeladim in Russia and the CIS' headed by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, this initiative benefited 70 youngsters and their families, all of whom are under the age of 16 years.
All recipients of this assistance received a food aid package containing various commonly used kosher food products. Not only will this lessen the financial burden on these families, it will also encourage them to observe the laws of Kashrut and utilize those products traditionally used in preparing traditional Chanukah meals and treats.
A good number of letters expressing gratitute have already been received by the community for this campaign. "We would like to express sincere thanks to Synagogue staff and especially Natalya. We were welcomed surprisingly well and received wonderful things for our eldest daughter Lyuba," wrote S.M. Lazarenko, the father of one of the recipients. "This parcel became a big deal for our family, especially with the recent birth of our baby boy Alyosha. All the best to you and yours!!"
