Youth Jewish Seminar

How is it possible to unite Jewish youth from different cities and towns of Russia? How to dip the young people into the atmosphere of Jewry and arose their interest to basic problems of Judaism? All who from August 18 to August 23 had luck to be in Kazan at a youth Jewish seminar knows know the answers.

After a long break, the Nizhny Novgorod Jewish Community organized a meeting for young people in the habitual form for them again. The program of the seminar included various business trainings and games, classes developing business qualities.

Moreover, the greatest discovery for most participants there became lectures by the Rabbi of Dov Ber Baitman specially invited from Dnepropetrovsk. It succeeded likewise to interest people being on different levels of knowledge of Judaism. For the short time of the seminar, the participants attended a course of lectures covered various sides of the Jewish tradition. These are either relation between the man and the woman or studying of the text of Torah with commentaries or even principles of Kabala. The Rabbi presented complicated fundamental problems in an interactive and, if one can so express, in the artistic style, which could not leave anyone indifferent. Knowledge given at the lectures for many people can be an incentive for further studying of Judaism.

“Homecoming”

This summer Nizhny Novgorod Jewish youth visited Israel under the free program of “Taglit-Birthright”.
Having assembled at the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod synagogue, we could not imagine what adventures are in store for us for the next ten days. There were from Nizhny Novgorod ten of us, all we were from 18 to 26, students or alumni. In Moscow, we joined our group and flew by a comfortable liner to our historical motherland. There they met us and we went to a splendid hotel in the marvelous city and port of Haifa. That night they told us many interested stories of Jewry, let into the sacrament of Shabbat and introduced to beauty of the Holy Land of Israel.
All the 10 days of our journey flew like one instant. Now when we are glancing at pass days we remember a number of colorful elements. We visited the Museum of Diaspora in Tel-Aviv, Golan Heights, and the Dead Sea. We saw the dawn on the Masada, floated boats along the river of Jordan, passed the night in a very real Bedouin tent, rode camels, wept
in the Yad Vashem, talked with a real deputy of the Knesset, walked about the old part of Jerusalem, prayed at the Kotel... Nevertheless, the most principle is that we did all it together: we were from Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, St.-Petersburg, Izhevsk, Ulyanovsk, Kostroma and surely Nizhny Novgorod!

I would like to thank all organizers of the travel and first of all the Nizhny Novgorod community very much. It was the unforgettable ten days in the motherland of our ancestors.

The Camp of “Gan Israel”, the Shift for Girls of 2011/5771

There really finished the shift for girls in the Jewish summer camp of “Gan Israel”. This summer they lived in comfortable conditions in the hotel of “Regina” in the city of Kazan from August 5 to August 14. We passed there nine unique days, which were rich by events days.
Uniqueness of this shift was in having opportunity for the parents of the girls to rest together with us in the camp and to plunge into the warm Jewish atmosphere. Especially as we happened to pass two Shabbats together: Everyone memorized it! In addition, had an opportunity to participate in different games, learn how they conduct Jewish weddings and visit a water park, skating rink and entertaining center! The girls enjoyed passing time very much, and a lot of them conveyed the wish of coming here next year. The pleasant discovery was some senior students to become excellent leaders, and we are unspeakable glad to it!
